🗞️ Senate Committee Clears Boeing Lawyer Mayer for NLRB Vote
The U.S. Senate HELP committee voted 11-10 along party lines to advance Scott Mayer, a lawyer who represented Boeing during its recent machinists' strike, for a full Senate vote on his nomination to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
The Senate committee's vote advances the nomination of Scott Mayer, Boeing's chief labor counsel who advised the company during its 101-day machinists' strike at defense facilities in Missouri and Illinois. His confirmation, along with that of James Murphy, would restore the NLRB's quorum and allow it to decide on hundreds of stalled cases.
Agency decisions are stalled since President Trump fired Democrat member Gwynne Wilcox in January 2025, a move that a district court ruled was illegal, though the Supreme Court issued a stay in May 2025 allowing the firing to stand while legal challenges continue.
Mayer's nomination faced scrutiny from Republicans, including Senator Josh Hawley, who questioned his representation of Boeing while workers were on strike. The committee had previously tabled his vote in October during the ongoing strike, but moved forward after the strike ended in November with workers approving a new contract. Democrats promoted him as a pragmatic choice to restore board operations.
The NLRB's paralysis has had significant consequences, delaying decisions on critical labor disputes. With the committee's approval, Mayer's nomination now heads to the full Senate for a final vote, where a simple majority is required for confirmation.
